Although most people don't need oxygen added to their cpap or bipap, 3 liters per minute isn't that high when it's blended with the air from your machine. It is interesting that they couldn't get your oxygen sats up considering your age and that you aren't a smoker. Did you used to be a smoker? Did you perhaps ever work in a field where you breathed toxic substances? Also, did they do a split-night study on you or did you have a full night titration? Sometimes people have low sats as they rebound from years of poor sleep but this will often correct itself within a few nights on pap.
Yes, some people definitely have an underlying lung dysfunction along with sleep apnea. It's good that you're seeing a pulmonologist and he's ordering more tests.
Also, why are you on bipap plus oxygen and not cpap plus oxygen? And just for clarification, bipap is the trade name for Respironics so if you're using a different brand, the correct term is bi-level pap.
