If you wake up gasping for breath your brain and your body are having reactions as if you were being strangled several times each night. Your blood pressure is increasing during each of these episodes and you are obviously having episodes where you were unable to breathe adequately even though you were still making an attempt to breathe.
The next step will be a sleep test wherein you are started off on cpap at various pressures to determine what is the lowest therepeutic pressure for you.
You would never let someone start to strangle you several times each night... so don't do it to yourself.
