If your mothers dementia is bad as you seem to indicate. While they will keep her in the hospital for a period of time perhaps a week after doing a tracheotomy. The problem that I see is if she does not understand what is going on that she probably will try to take it out.Just be aware that this could be the case.If that happens then you are into 24/7 watching until either the dementia goes away or you close it off.
When you read the posts from those of us with trachs we often talk about take the trach tube/stoma buttons out and reinserting them. However this is not done with a fresh/new trach. Not until the stoma (hole in throat) is completely formed do they start doing that--approx 3-6 weeks sometimes more.I am not trying to say don't do it at all. I am trying to make sure you are aware of the complications that can arise with a trach. When you find an ENT or Thoratic Surgeon that is willing to do this for you make sure they have experience with trachs for OSA patients. Make sure you ask the hard questions of what the down sides are to a trach as well as the benefits.
