I had dreams too, where I was being smothered or drowning. They have stopped since I started using CPAP. We normally have most of our dreams during REM sleep and from what I've read women tend to have worse apnea during REM sleep. In my study my apnea was much worse during my REM sleep. That was a problem for me because for a long time I thought that when I woke up with my heart pounding that the content of the dream was causing the heart pounding. Over time it slowly dawned on me that the dream wasn't causing the pounding heart or breathlessness and that's when I began to suspect sleep apnea and decided to get it checked out.

And by the way, it is still considered apnea even if the breathing doesn't stop completely. What you described are hyponeas. I hope that you get your results soon.
