In other parts of the world 24V DC is common - and redily avaiable batteries are available.

Here in the US - just conntect two 12V Auto or Marine batteries in series to get the 24 V.

For back-up power supplies you want deep dischage batteries (Marine, Solar/Alternate Energy, or certain industrial batteries). I do think that the Alternate Energy and some of the industrial batteries are available in a 24V model).
