My 1st night on CPAP

Posted by Art on April 18, 2002 at 05:42:22:

I picked up my Sullivan S6 Elite yesterday afternoon. The DME person was VERY nice and helpful. She showed me how to use the machine and helped me pick out a mask as I had a wide variety to choose from. It was down to the Breeze nasal pillows and the Ultra Mirage. I picked the Ultra Mirage even though I know a lot of people here like the Breeze. If the Mirage doesn't work out for me I'll buy the Breeze later.

They never got an Rx for a humidifier even though my doctor said he sent in an Rx for a heated one. The DME left his office a message asking for him to send another Rx for it with a letter of necessity for the insurance company because they WILL pay if they get that. (Unlike what the insurance told me on the phone the other day - see post below). So no humidifier till the Doc calls.

The DME person told me not to stress myself and try to wear the mask for only a couple hours on the first night. I knew I was ok with the CPAP on my titration so I thought I would try the whole night anyway. She also advised me to use the ramp but I didn’t after reading post here. I knew I would have no problems getting use to the pressure.
I went to bed at 9:00 pm, which is early for me. I figured it would take me extra time to fall asleep, I was right. I fell asleep about 11:30pm. I woke up coughing with a dry throat at 4:30am. So I got up, went to the bathroom and drank a glass of water then I tried to go back to sleep but could not so I took off my mask and then fell asleep quickly. Got up this morning about 7:00 feeling about the same as I usually do except a very dry nose and throat.

Hopefully the doctor will call the DME with the Rx for the heated humidifier today.
