Joy, you need to go to a hospital that is certified by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (aasmnet.org) *and* a doctor that is board certified in sleep. I was told by a sleep technologist that this is *much* more important than you would think. Most hospitals and sleep clinics don't want to go through the rigorous certification process these people would put them through. Part of that is that these certified sleep programs are required to follow certain regulations to go the extra mile to get an accurate diagnosis. They are not allowed to cut corners. My sleep test was originally scheduled for a non-certified center. I was *strongly* urged by this tech in an email to make sure it was certified by the AASM, so I twisted some arms and had it rescheduled. Am I glad! The first non-certified hospital just said they would call the day of the test to remind me; few instructions. The certified hospital I am scheduled for now sent me a detailed list of instructions and a multi-week sleep log -- very important! -- to record my sleep habits at least a week, preferably more, before the test. That way, if the test is borderline, they have the proof in writing that I have a sleep disorder and can make an argument for insurance to pay up for a CPAP if I need one. The non-certified hospital didn't even think of this. Joy, you need to get another doctor and lab. Go over to aasmnet.org and see their state by state lists of certifed sleep programs. Pick one near you and schedule another appointment through your primary care physician. Believe me, with sleep programs, even with those in hospitals, sleep certification makes a real difference. Let us know how it goes with you! God bless you!
