Is this a symptom of sleep apnea?

Posted by Cheryl on May 06, 2002 at 03:42:44:

My husband had an episode where he woke up in the middle of the night not being able to breathe. He was even pounding himself on the chest trying to stimulate breathing. He was also making a horrible wheezing sound as if gasping for breath. Nothing like this has ever happened before. I have been reading a lot about sleep apnea and most things that I have read indicate that the person with sleep apnea will have episodes of apnea but are not actually aware of it. My husband does smoke and is about twenty pounds overweight. He also snores. I just wanted to see if anyone has ever had an episode like this before. It is almost impossible to get my husband to go to the doctor, so I am trying to find out as much information as I can. Thank you.
