Posted by Liz on May 06, 2002 at 06:58:10:Hi,
Two years on the Bi-PAP now, and I am plagued with chronic irritation in my throat, esophagus, and sometimes my mouth where my mouth feels like it's been rubbed raw by sandpaper. I also get more than the usual respiratory tract infections and am just getting over having pneumonia. I use a heated humidifier and clean my tubing and mask regularly. I've been told my SOA may have been precipitated by a move to a different part of the country a few years ago and exposure to some kind of allergen, but an allergist could not pinpoint any particular allergen.
This is kind of a two-fold question, because I believe that my Bi-Pap is playing a major role in these problems. But I also feel there is something not very kosher about the company that provides the service for my machine and the respiratory therapist who visits. Since I was started on the Bi-Pap two years ago, this company has run me through five different machines. The first one, I was told by the RT, was the "Cadillac" of Bi-Paps. Well, about six months into using it and being comfortable with it, the company decided I did not need that one and gave me a different model (read cheaper). After about four or five months, that one started doing strange things, and they had to bring out another one. Long story short, every time they bring me a different one, it turns out to be a piece of junk within four to six months. I also notably seem to get struck with really bad respiratory infections of some type after each switch of machines. The thing is that every time a machine starts acting goofy (stops short in the middle of an inspiration, clicks on and off, has false starts with inspiration, etc. etc.), the RT basically insinuates there's nothing wrong with it, and it must be me. He acts as if he is just humoring me by changing machines, which is such a crock. I'm fed up with the whole thing and ready to take some kind of action against this company, if necessary.
Has anybody experienced anything similar? Does anyone know what might be going on here? I would really appreciate any advice. Thanks.
