Posted by MrsGrumpy on May 06, 2002 at 07:26:05:I have been on CPAP for about a month, now. I have adjusted well to the mask and pressure, except for one thing...about 4 times now (more recent in the last week), I wake up with a severely bloated abdomen from swallowing air. It hurts so bad that I can't stand up straight. It takes me about 2-3 hours before I get back to normal. I have tried Gas-X. And then I called my doctor. He was pretty unhelpful. After doing some research, I suggested lowering my pressure, which he prescribed. It is now 8 -- it was 10. I also got a new chin strap that is supposed to be the best. I tighten it so hard that I feel like my head is in a vice.
After having the pressure lowered to 8, I still had the problem all weekend, plus I woke up every hour -- when I was on 10 I would sleep 3-4 hours at a time. So I don't think the pressure reduction is the answer.
I wouldn't mind this if the bloating was just uncomfortable. This is awful. I am 43 yrs. old and only about 15 pound overweight. With this bloating, I walk around like a stooped old lady. I can't even get my clothes on to go to work. The first time this happened, I called the sleep center at my hospital, because I thought my stomach would explode -- literally. Any suggestions??
