Posted by Bill in TX on May 06, 2002 at 09:56:07:I'm probably going to take a job that will involve about 50% travel -- some of it international.
I've been on CPAP -- actually Mallinckrodt 418P APAP w/ ResMed Humidaire -- for almost 3 months and had my first CPAP travel experience last week, as I went overnight for my job interview.
I had learned that I am allowed an extra carry-on for the medical equipment and I know better than to check something as important as the CPAP machine, which has become a lifeline. Combine the weight of CPAP, humidifier, mask tubing, notebook computer and clothes... and it was a real hassle lugging that much stuff onto the plane.
I'm wondering what solutions others may have come up with as far as intelligent air travel with CPAP. Does the extra carry-on bag have to contain only CPAP equipment to be allowed? I'm thinking that what I need is a briefcase for the notebook, a rolling bag that meets carry-on requirements for clothes and toiletries, and the extra bag for all the CPAP stuff. I'd appreciate any suggestions about how others do this.
I'm not willing to travel without the humidifier, so the other alternative I was thinking about was to buy one of the integrated CPAP/humidifier units like the Remstar or the HC220. But the 418P is doing a phenomenal job for me, so it would seem to be really dumb for me to go without APAP 3 days a week.
I suppose that I'm just confronting my new reality, realizing I really need this equipment with me wherever I go, and am looking for reassurance that others are out there traveling successfully with a minimum of hassle.
