Two thoughts: Mouthbreathing and Titration.

Mouthbreathing: How much of that 17 is going down your airway and how much of it is being allowed to escape into your bedroom?

Titration: 17, although fairly high, was merely what they determined was sufficient based upon that one night in the sleep lab. That night was 1/365th of your year's sleep. Thats not much of a sample. Maybe it was valid then, maybe it is valid now. Maybe not.
