I also have many of the symptoms you presented along with a significant decrease in my intellectual ability. I especially can't read much and retain anything. I had a sleep test in 99 and it showed nothing wrong (no apneas), but it was done at a VA hospital. Then they thought it was allergies, then they said it was anxiety, so went the antidepressant route, when that didn't work it was ADD, so have been on Ritalin. Even with “speed” I’m still sleepy and not overly functional. Had another sleep test and casually mentioned the "no apneas" from the first test, but described all my symptoms to the technician. She said she would test for UARS/RERAs by adding another device to the test. That test showed 70 arousals (unfortunately not the kind I prefer at my age) so I go in for my CPAP titration test this week and also MSLT to evaluate possible narcolepsy. I have been so sleep deprived and it has gotten much worse over the last few years that it was having such a dramatic negative effect on my work I retired.
I think doctors are very quick to diagnose depression or other illnesses without considering sleep deprivation. I’ve now wasted years of being brain dead when it looks like it was SDB all along. I’m hoping the CPAP titration goes well and I get my intellect back. I’m dying to read a good murder mystery again.
So hang in there and just because you may not have apneas, doesn’t mean you don’t have some other sleep disordered breathing. Unfortunately, I didn’t know about the VA test not registering UARS so I also lost out on any VA compensation because of it. Make sure you go to a GOOD sleep lab that can test for UARS/RERA as well - not all will.
