I agree with your comment about doctors being too quick to diagnose these symptoms as depression. For years, I was trying to treat my condition as depression, as it was the only possibility that made sense to the medical profession. I was always physically fit, am only 40 this year, and did not fit the perceived profile of an apnea sufferer. I went through the counseling and anti-depressant medication mill without results. It is frustrating to look back on 20 years of wasted youth. On the other hand, my recent improvements with CPAP have given me hope and some relief to know that much of my problem is not some complicated, intangible mental/emotional disorder, for which the only medical treatment is to spend thousands or tens of thousands of dollars on counseling therapy, a method that is too often does not yield results.
As Dement emphasizes in "The Promise of Sleep", the medical profession definitely needs to be educated on sleep disorders.
