If you need the machine to get air into your system at night, then you need it to do the same during naps. When you have an apnea, tissues relax and close off your airway - you stop breathing - your blood has no source of oxygen - carbon dioxide permeates your blood (That's what causes the headaches) - your blood pressure rises - your heart speeds up - your lungs empty and, finally, you gasp for air, awakening yourself in the process without being aware that you are awakening. All of this exercise of your bodily systems goes on without awareness on your part. When you sleep without your machine for ANY length of time, you are putting your body through all of this each time you have an apnea. How many apneas or hyponeas did they discover per hour when you had your sleep test? That's how many times your body goes through this when you do not use your machine. This is why you felt so miserable.
