As most people have stated, the CPAP is not counted. Except when you get a illinformed agent like I got on my vacation this winter, flying from Mpls. to San Juan, the agent(American Airlines) where I checked my bags would not let me any further untill I put my walkman (CD) into my carryon. I had a regular carryon, my CPAP and a small pouch with my CD player in it. She kept saying you cannot board with 3 items, even after showing her the FAA document stating the CPAP should not be counted and consulting with her superviser(?) she refused to let me any further. Rather than stand there and argue anymore I just put the CD player in my carryon, boarded the plane, took it out of the carryon & listened to it the rest of the trip. On the way back I had no problems other than in SJ they looked at the CPAP & stuck a sniffer probe in it.
I guess what really got to me was the attitude she had even after I showed her the regulation. She claimed that it didn't apply as American had there own rules! GRRRRR! I'm glad I had been sleeping well & I wasn't my old(pre CPAP) grumpy self , I may never have made it.
