I just returned from three months in New Zealand and Australia, where the Spirit is available (not approved in US yet by FDA). The spirit uses essentially the same software as the autoset T, although there are some differences in how much detailed information it can store (I believe it stores only two nights of truly detailed profiles, with up to 365 of less detailed profiles, whereas I think the T will store more).

The Spirit is much smaller, lighter, and more portable than the T. Sorry, I don't have the facts and figures, but it's an easy thing to put on the bedside, and not difficult to tote along; certainly much more convenient than the T. Also, they are planning to sell a module that will attach to the back of the Spirit that will let you measure and record oxygen saturation and a variety of other polysomnographic measures. This module isn' t available yet even overseas, but I've heard it shold be out in several months, six, I think.

Personally, I used the machine on a rental/loan basis for about 3 weeks. I wasn't terribly satisfied, but that may have to do with my own particulars, and others may be quite happy with it. In fact, some sleep docs I spoke with in Australia seemed to think the system and algorithm is quite good. (Aside: they have some excellent sleep docs in Sydney, as Collin Sullivan, the person who first proposed the use of CPAP for OSA and who later founded Resmed, is a major player in the Sleep community of Sydney and, I believe, helped shape the sleep programs there.)

If you are a hands-on person with respect to your apnea, and you do get the Spirit or T, I'd recommend obtaining the clinician's instruction manual and software, and thoroughly reading the manual. That will fill you in on specifics that some of the doctors don't even seem to understand about the system--especially about the particular nature of the response to different respiratory events.
