I'm sure some of the people there who just assume that they have FMS are mistaken. Some may also have bad doctors, but...the condition exists. Many different conditions have similar symptoms. Fatigue is especially common.
There is a specific sleep pattern that has been documented in many FMS/CFS cases. It is an altered "step progression". There isn't any one fool proof test for FMS or CFS, since the conditions are syndromes, just classified by a group of symptoms.
I was formerly diagnosed with CFS and then later with FMS. Experimental treatments failed and I was sent for a sleep study. I did not have the specific step progression. FMS was rejected as a diagnosis and I found out that I had apnea.
If you want reliable information on FMS/CFS, I suggest that you go to the CDC's (Centers for Disease control) website. There are lots of facts about both ailments and the information is reliable because it's through the federal government. Just check the dates of the articles...old theories about a lot of diseases aren't deleted.
If someone has been diagnosed (by a doctor) with FMS or another condition you should not discount that. I know a few CFS/FMS patients and they have problems coping just like people with apnea, narcolepsy, etc. CFS and FMS weren't widely accepted for a long time and a lot of misconceptions still exist. Its hard to deal with any chronic medical problem. There can be mental and emotional repercussions that are just as debilitating as the diseases. Please be sympathetic.
