I'm also an engineer (electical)
In some other posting it seemed like the other person's oximeter only took samples every 30 seconds. I don't know if that means the average over 30 seconds or the value during the sample time. In either case, a whole apnea could be missed in that 30 seconds. If your oximeter is the same, you may have more apneas, and/or worse O2 levels, than the oximeter showed.
I don't think they could give you a regular CPAP, since they don't know how much pressure will fix the apneas. Maybe what this does is show that you need a real sleep study. Possibly they may send you home with an AuroPAP and then read out the data to see if you have apnea, and what pressure will fix it.Then they could give you a regular CPAP set to that pressure. If it looks like a long time before you get a sleep study, you could try asking for an AutoPAP in the meantime.
Commenting on sleep tech's remarks, I would guess that your Dr is trying to save money. Maybe there's a long wait time for sleep studies, so he's trying to get some results fast. If so though, it seems like he would have started the next step right away. If the Dr hasn't seen you yet, maybe when he does he'll start the next step.
