Everyone's anatomy is dimensionally different, so it is certainly possible that plugging with your tongue may not work for you. But persistence might also be rewarded. Tucking in your jaw (instead of jutting it forward) before you pull the chinstrap tight might help. It might also help to use a slightly higher bed pillow to tip your head forward onto your chin.
That said, I'm now out of ideas ...
