Everyone has an occasional hypnogogic or hypnopompic jerk. If they are frequent enough that they are preventing someone from falling/staying asleep they can be treated.
If these events occur as part of an arousal from a apnea, it means the PAP pressure is not high enough.
If the events occur frequently and are not apnea related, they could be related to PLMS, abnormal brain activity, abnormal muscle activity, etc. Someone with frequent sleep jerks should be seen by a competant sleep specialist.
