Your doctors recommendation is probably a good one as a dental device will often help with snoring and mild sleep apnea and is the least expensive route to take at this point.
On the other hand, if you are overweight, even slightly, losing weight will most likely make a big difference. I know losing weight is easier said than done!
You ask what does an oximetry test for somebody without apnea look like. I've had a couple of sleep studies (and of course this showed a trend of my oxygen level and heart rate all night) and I'm considered to have very normal sleep. I'm not much older than you are and still have a lot of stage 3 and 4 sleep, my heart rate remained between 60 and 70 beats all night, and my oxygen level never dropped below 94%. My apnea-hypopnea index was less than 1.
