insurance breakthrough

Posted by HAZY on June 12, 2002 at 08:46:05:

It’s sure nice to post some good news. I can see some sunshine breaking through the haze…all right. Enough! After 7 months, the insurance company broke down and approved my short-term disability. I have been fighting with my employer for accommodations and when that failed I was “released”. This had been going on for about a year and I could no longer do the job, with or without accommodations. I applied for STD and was turned down. I have been without income for 7-months.

A sleep disorder was diagnosed two years ago, but I’ve had no improvement with CPAP (1 ˝ yrs compliant) etc. It is most likely an UARS thing, but my luck with Doc’s hasn’t been good and it has been difficult to get referrals to specialists. With the help of my PCP Doc, I have found a specialist who likes hard cases. The really important news will be improvement of my health. But financially and mentally this is the first break in a long time. Mentally, because it substantiates the problem. This makes it easier to interact with people. The insurance company and my employer made me feel like they thought I was trying to pull something (I am a 56 yr old engineer). I have been embarrassed in front of my colleagues by my employer. I have a hard time explaining myself, but I think most of you will know what I mean.

What I would like to pass along to this forum/visitors is that it would not have happened if not for a good Dr. and a good lawyer. My employer would have fired me over a year ago if I hadn’t had an experienced employment law attorney, and I would still be wondering where to go next if it were not for my PCP Doc. He is understanding and listens. About 4 months ago I asked him if he would be insulted if I bought him a book. He said he wouldn’t be (with a slightly puzzled look). I went and got him a copy of Dr. Dement’s “Promise of Sleep”. He has thanked me for this and shared the knowledge with some of his colleagues. Thanks SleepNet.
