In general mask leakage can be a problem for any CPAP. Normal CPAP's can handle a little mask leakage without a major problems (although you may not get the best treatment for the night).
However it is much more of a problem for AutoCPAPs as the mask leakage either hides problems or looks like a problem (false events). Thus the AutoCPAP either stops responding - or ramps up to the max in the presence of a mask leak (depending on the design of the AutoCPAP).
Most of the current AutoCPAPs will lock their pressure increase routine when there is a mask leak detected.
Thus, depending on the machine a mask leak will cause the pressure either to go down towards the minimum setting, lock at its current setting, or trend up to the maximum setting -- independent of what problems you are actually having.
This is why it is important for you to be able to tell if you are having mask leakage problems as soon as possible if you have an AutoCPAP so that you can work on fixing them. The AutoCPAPs do not work right when there is a mask leak.
