Can they detect mouth breathing?

This is probably a very basic question, but I am wondering how
the sleep lab can tell apnea and hypopnea from simply being a
mouth breather while you sleep. I had two sensors under my
nose for my test, but I don't remember anything in front of
my mouth.

How do they tell? If I breathe through my mouth (which I
do sleeping at home) then the chest and abdomen bands
will expand but very little air would come out my nostrils, I
would think.
