Posted by Jen_ on June 13, 2002 at 08:35:56:First some quick background- I was diagnosed with OSA a year and a half ago, then Narcolepsy a bit after that, so I've always had dreams (most nights vivid) on and off the CPAP.
I've been sleeping much better with my CPAP, but sometimes still have the nightmares that plagued me before starting it. What would happen (and still happens sometimes) is that I'll have a nightmare that gets worse and worse until I wake up (or my husband wakes me up) in a panic. I've guessed that it's due to the apnea- that my brain is sending the "must wake up and breathe" signal, but it's quite unsettling. I've tried lucid dreaming which I've had some success with, but these dreams are different- I'll confront the fear (last night my own version of "I see dead people"), ask it what it wants or whatever, and the dream will actually get worse. One night I was surrounded by snakes and I thought to myself, "This is a dream, there's no reason to be afraid of a few snakes," and suddenly they were multipled and joined by an array of nifty insects.
Has anyone else had this type of experience? What have you found helpful in stopping it?
(Some more background- it's not a weight issue, I'm 5'4" and weigh 130lbs down from the 135 that I was titrated at. Been trying to eat healthier gradually, keep genetic predisposition to heart issues at bay.)
