It's worth the email- perhaps browse through some columns professionally written about sleep apnea. I think it's horribly underdiagnosed and many suffer needlessly as a result. At the very least, you'll help raise awareness and perhaps remove some of the embarassment stigma from it.

I say stigma because I've heard many "funny anecdotes" from coworkers who have shared rooms with others while on the road. The "funny" part of the story is when they talk about the bizarre equipment that their roommate uses to sleep. The story ceases to cause snickers when I tell them that I use such a device (I'm fairly attractive, female, thin, early 30's) and what it is for.

Most anyone I've spoken to who has a glimmer of an idea about OSA thinks that it's caused by being obese (of course as a result of laziness). People share these assesments with me because I don't fit the "profile". Although I'm quite offended by such judgements, I've come to realize that they're purely spoken in ignorance rather than bigotry. I endeavor to educate when given the opportunity.

You've got just such an opportunity now- please take the time to write to the magazine. Share how your life has been improved with diagnosis and treatment and what the risks to your long-term health were. Perhaps with a personal email/letter, you can touch at least one more person than before.
