some thermisters have a third prong that bends down in front of mouth to detect mouth breathing

Remember the airflow reduction needs to have an accompanying desaturation in order to be scored as an event. If the tech saw airflow reduction without desats they would check for mouth breathing or artifact (something wrong with the signal).
