Signs of heart damage from apnea?

Posted by Very_Fatigued on June 26, 2002 at 01:50:45:

What are the symptoms of heart damage caused by long term apnea? I have had apnea for probably over 10 years and have just recently been diagnosed with severe OSA. I have been experiencing some wierd feelings in my chest, such as painful little cramps and twinges where I think my heart is and numbness in three fingers in my left arm. I asked my sleep doc, a pulmonologist, and he said that the numbness in my fingers is probably a pinched "ulnar nerve". He didn't think the chest pains where anything since I am in my early 30s and "not the age", though I am overweight. My resting EKG was normal. Thing is, heart trouble runs in my family, with all four grandparents having had heart surgeries. I have been taking my blood pressure and while the top number is normal, 118 to 132 averaging mid-120's, the bottom number is way low at 50 to 70, mostly around 60. At my weight? What would heart damage caused by OSA look like? Does apnea damage cause the lower number to be abnormally low? Should I insist on seeing a cardiologist?
