The way it was explained to me is that while you are asleep the brain typically sends out delta waves to tell the body that it is asleep and all is good. When you are awake, the brain sends out alpha waves telling the body that it is awake and ready to function. What happens with the intrusions is that the brain sends out alpha waves when we are asleep and should be getting delta waves so the body never really feels rested because it isn't getting the proper messages from the brain.
I never heard about this being on my sleep studies until I went to a new doctor. I have been using a CPAP for OSA for 2 1/2 years with very poor results, mostly because I take the mask off in my sleep - the new doctor thinks this may be due to the alpha waves.
Alpha wave intrusions are common in people with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I went back to a second doctor because of a lot of pain. Unfortunately it sounds like alpha waves intrusions, like Fibro and CFS aren't well understood.
Best of Luck with your sleep!
