Normally, a person spends approximately 20% of the night in REM sleep. We often use the term "REM rebound" when we see a higher percentage than this. It's not unusual to place a person on PAP for the first time and for them to go into REM sleep very quickly. Sometimes they will stay in REM sleep for an hour or longer. This "REM rebound" phase is the body trying to catch up on REM sleep. In the sleep lab, we want to see REM rebound as it's one sign that the patient is doing well during a titration.
