Posted by Kiwi G on July 18, 2002 at 22:11:06:I recently had a new experience with my autoPAP, which I've been on since April 2001. I awoke feeling that no way was I going to take off the mask, it was just too comfortable!
The night before I had spent in a hotel in another city, in a well heated room with a heavy frost outside (it's winter down under). No humidifier, usually no problem. Unfortunately I was coming down with a cold or flu and had a sore throat (should probably have stayed at home). I awoke 4-5 times during the night with dry nasal passages and a sore throat. The following day, on my return home, the sore throat continued and I started to deveop a real head cold. I was very apprehensive, not looking forward to going to bed as this was the first cold for almost 18 months and my first on CPAP. Still, I remembered the advice from this forum, persevered and turned the humidity setting up a bit. I managed to breath, with a little difficulty but fell asleep anyway.
Upon awakening the next morning, my nose was clear, my sore throat had disappeared, and I felt great! But I suspected that once I took off the mask and started breathing cold dry air (no such thing as central heating in NZ), that feeling wouldn't last. I lay there enjoying the feeling for about 10-15 minutes before getting out of bed. Sure enough, 30 minutes later I was feeling miserable again, sore throat and all stuffed up. Isn't humidification great! If the manufacturers could develop a lightweight, almost invisible CPAP that could be worn during the day without impeding speech, just think what a market there'd be!
I did come down with the flu, spent a few days at home, but managed to sleep well in spite of everything. I recovered very quickly, thanks no doubt to CPAP, and now look back on those few days as a very positive experience.
(For the past 2-3 months I've settled down to using the F&P Aclaim mask almost exclusively, with the AutoSet T and Humidaire humidifier).
