I think that heating and hunidifying her room's air and using a heated humidifier would help.
It also might help to send her to an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor who will do more than nod and smile and say (at least to himself) 'well, you're old, what do you expect?'.
Mom saw 2 ENT's. One just used a speculum and a flashlight, the other did that first and then put in a scope (a long, thin rubber tube with a lens at it's tip). Guess who found out more about her upper airway?
The first guy found a deviated septum, but would not suggest surgery because Mom was too old for him. His cutoff is 65. I guess he figured Mom should just shut up and suffer in silence. The 2nd, more thorough doctor, noticed the septum problem and large turbinates. He has no arbitrary age cutoff, as long as the patient is healthy. She had surgery yesterday, by the way. So far, so good, but it's still early.
Finding a doctor who doesn't 'write her off' could make all the difference.
