My understanding is that the machine DOES respond to hyponeas but it doesn't respond to centrals (or mixed in AutoAdjust/LT lingo). As per Perry, I don't think any machine responds to centrals.

So, it would be possible to decrease hypopneas by changing the definition, BUT I think that would be counter-productive because then I think you'd get more apneas. I have lots of hypopneas every night but rarely do I have even 1 apnea. Usually I have 0 apneas and anywhere from 12 to 40-50 hyponeas every night. The machine responds to the hypopnea (precursor to an apnea event) and keeps it from going further.
