I lost a friend today...

Posted by George/PA on July 29, 2002 at 19:23:34:

he was less than a year older than I. Our health problems were very similar. He was diagnosed with OSA in 1995, two years after I was. He steadfastly refused to use his CPAP...couldn't stand to be "hooked to a machine for the rest of his life." His diabetes became nearly impossible to control. He had knee replacement surgery the same week I had shoulder surgery in June. He developed an infection that was responding somewhat to antibiotics, but his body just couldn't keep up the fight.
His death certificate will almost certainly say "complications of diabetes", but we can be just as certain that it should include "complications of untreated sleep apnea."
He was a brilliant educator and biologist, as well as an Eagle Scout and Scout executive. He will be sorely missed.
