How do they work?

Posted by Loud Larry on July 29, 2002 at 20:16:43:

I am one of those curious types who want to take everything apart. Lest I take apart an expensive CPAP machine - I am trying to find out how they really operate. I understand CPAP provides continuous positive pressure - does it just leak out a valve somewhere when the patient breathes out? BiPap is supposed to provide pressure on the in-breathe only - how does the machine figure out the patient is breaathing in? Is it just on a timer, or does it measure actual flow rate?
