I think the apnea just comes on in such a gradual way that we do not notice it. After being on CPAP we again get use to normal sleep. When we do not use it we are immediately aware of the abnormal apena.

A few years ago I was driving down a street a dusk and simply could not read the house numbers. Went in for an eye exam and got glasses for the first time. When I walked out of the doctors office I was totally amazed and stunned at the detail I could see. I was half blind for heaven knows how long and did not even know it.

Not using CPAP makes you realize how bad your apnea is, like taking off your glasses or contacts can make you aware of how "blind" you are.
