It's your life- push the doctor

Posted by kooledd on August 08, 2002 at 09:19:26:

I had a full sleep test done at an accredited sleep lab. Two
months later I had to switch health plans and took in my
results to go over with my new primary care doctor (HMO). He
read the results quickly and said I needed a new study to be
done by his HMO doctors. I got more and more upset after leaving since my first study was well done.
I wrote him a letter outlining my health concerns of a new
test w/o my CPAP due to findings of heart arrythimia, cen-
tral apneas, etc. After three weeks of no response, I followed with a phone call requesting an update. A month from my original letter he calls to thank me. His HMO "sleep
doctor" says my original test was better than what they do.
Additonally, my health concerns were warranted and he was
cancelling my subsequent test and referring me to a neurolo-
gist for my central apneas. Said he read the original sleep
report too fast in the time allotted to me!!! My letter cau-
sed him to go reread my chart when he had more time. At
least he was honest.
Moral of story- you have to push and stay on top of your
health concerns. If you don't care- who will.
