Pat,
The Goodnight 418P can run on a 12V battery if it is run through a DC-to-AC converter (doesn't last as long - burns up more power due to the conversion) but it has a direct DC connection that is 24 volts. That is why it would need two 12V batters wired in series.
There are some machines that can run direct off of a 12V DC connection and those you could run on one battery. It all depends on how you plan on using it. If you have your owners manual, it should say if it has a DC option and what voltage it would need. Otherwise, most (please check with you company who makes the machine first!) machines can run on a 12V batter with a DC-to-AC converter (isn't this called an inverter?). But be warned, not all of the converters are the same and your machine may need a specific type to work correctly. Again, check with the maker of the machine first.
Hope this helps. Also, you can search the previous forums for threads on camping, power outage, and the like. In a lot of these, the options of batteries and X-PAPs are talked about.
Regards,
Mike
