My sons restless sleep

I am very concerned about my four year old son. He lays on his stomach and bangs his head violently on his pillow while singing to himself at least five or six times a night.
He has done this since he was a year old but I never thought much about it until now because he cries and whines in the morning because of lack of sleep. It is a nightmare at our house every morning. Please give me any suggestions that will help my son.
