I saw a report on the news recently that the level of melatonin (which somehow helps trigger sleep) increases later in the day in teenagers, so they often do not get tired until much later at night. Some high schools are actually making the morning start time later to enable teens to get a reasonable amount of sleep before classes start. One high school principal who was interviewed said that the later start time has improved attendance, performance and attitude.
