26 month old wont stay in bed at night

When our son was 8 months old I "Ferberised" him, and it worked out great. After 2 weeks I just laid him in bed, told hin Good night, and that was it. We have now put him in a big bed and at first I started laying down with him because I thought he was scared of the bed. Big Mestake!! Now I have to lay with him, and the time it takes him to get to sleep is getting longer like 1 hour or more. What can I do to break him of this habit. If I walk out of the room and shut the door he just gets up and opens the door and is right behind me. Help me.
