I think adolescents need an average of 9.25 hours of sleep per night. This is a time in their lives that they don't produce as much melatonin, and sleep patterns can really get out of whack reslulting in Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome. A young person experiencing daytime sleepiness, or having trouble getting out of bed in the morning could have any number of different sleep disorders. My son is 15 and has DSPS, and it took a couple of doctors and 3 sleep studies to finally diagnose it. He has been treated for it since the middle of March, and already shows remarkable improvement, and what do you know? He didn't need anti-depressants and counseling as one physician suggested, and he isn't lazy as numerous relatives and friends suggested. If your child is tired, please combine common sense with research to help him or her--it's worth it, and go to a reliable sleep clinic.
