This is a difficult situation. What worked for us might not necessarily work for you. We just told our son who was around the same age as your child matter-of-factly that it was broke, and that it had to go bye-bye. Then we gave him his blanket and teddy bear to cuddle in bed at night. The first week he had a hard time without it, but we stood our ground, and finally, after a week or so, he just lost interest and forgot about it.
