8 yr old daughter terrified of bedtime

Please help. My 8 yr old daughter has slowly become terrified of going to sleep alone. If we try and make her get into her own bed her panic is genuine and very distressing. I do not believe she is manipulating us. The only compromise that we have hit on is that now she sleeps with her 11 yr old sister in a double bed in the spare room. Once asleep she does sleep through, but her perception seems to be that she suffers from terrible nightmares. We cannot convince her that this is not true. Please can anyone help as we are desperately worried.
