Constant throat clearing in sleep. Normal?

Posted by Hillel on May 09, 2001 at 10:49:09:

My four week old baby constantly clears his throat (or at least that's what it sounds like) during sleep. The sound is hard to describe ... like the hawking of an old man. It's loud, it's persistent, and it's keeping us up and making us concerned, of course. Is this normal? What could it mean? He has no other symptoms of colds or allergies that we can detect--no runny nose, no apparent congestion, no watery eyes. I've heard that babies produce a lot of mucus, particularly after feedings. We've noticed this during the day. But his throat clearing during sleep is much more frequent, and it often occurs hours after a feeding. Help!
