This is what I have and it is called alveolar hypoventilation. I was examined by a allergist who is also a child pulmonary doctor and was told I had early stages of emphysema.

I had extensive tests done recently for co2 retention and will find out next month but I also do not wake up refreshed and have brain fog.

I have had 6 sleep studies and 3 of them when the co2 was recorded is higher than normal.

co2 retention is normally found in obsese people supposely but I found on a listserver for people with breathing disorders like emphysema some are using a bipap for their sleep apnea and co2 retention.

I used a bipap but the machine knocked out my deep sleep so I had to have major surgery for sleep apnea but still have co2 retention.

I guess treating co2 retention is not easy. Next month on April 8 I see my doctor for possible treatment. I was told before that no meds are used unless a ventilation machine is used and I think the drugs have harsh side affects.

Sometimes even the best of them miss things and I have had several tell me that co2 retention for me is not that bad. Well since I don't get good sleep I will found out next month.

Seeing the best doctor does not guarantee good results. I have seen several so called famous doctors and I am very disgusted with their service.

As this forum is moderated I cannot say much here.

I had a PFT test which is you breathe into a machine and they test your large and small airways and mine were below normal. I was given a brochodilator and retook the test and came up to normal.
