Posted by noshuteye on April 15, 2002 at 16:41:12:My son has never been a stellar sleeper. As an infant, a "big" nap day was one where he slept 45 minutes. He doesn't suffer from ADHD, is healthy, intelligent, thriving, etc. But this sleep thing is killing us. He goes to bed around 9pm (bed, not sleep) most nights. He will lie in bed reading for up to 2 hours. If he's not asleep after the first 90 minutes, he comes out of his room and spews forth with inane questions or comments. Eventually (usually) he will go to sleep. Last night he got there fine, but was up and down the godforsaken stairs for 3 hours until I finally told him I could do no more and that he had to go to bed and stay there. He proceeded to cry (more like howl) until my husband relented and went to his room to lay with him until he fell asleep. My husband is an insomniac, so he can empathize (whether that's a good thing is up for debate), but I just get angry and frustrated.
We have tried melatonin, homeopathic remedies, breathing exercises, you name it... I frankly wouldn't care if he didn't sleep through the night (sort of like food, I figure if his body needs it he will succumb to it), if he could just let US sleep through it. But he has to spread the joy...
Any suggestions?
