I've read that head-banging is a rhythm thing for the kids, and they use it to get to sleep. She may be having the night wakings, and just have poor skills getting back to sleep on her own. Keep looking for information on this and related behaviours for some hints. Possibly try to find a 'substitute' rhythym that will work for her as she learns how to make the transition to sleep.
