I read through the posts too, and it does sound like a lot of parents share this problem! Our son always started the night out fine in his own bed (the sleep problems start 3 or 4 hours in for him) until he was 2-1/2. One day he suddenly said there were monsters in his room, wouldn't even go in there at night, and wouldn't lie down unless someone was holding him. We did that and after a couple of months moved to a chair next to his bed. 7 months later, that's where we still are, but I'm trying to see it as progress that he's not running around the house screaming at bedtime anymore, and he's not wanting anyone to lie down with him. I've heard suggestions that the next step is to move the chair gradually away from the bed, until eventually you're sitting practically outside his door.
I'm a little concerned about the comments that this is a "habit" to be broken. If your son suddenly can't stand to be away from you, maybe there's something going on emotionally with him. In our case, we're at wits end trying to figure out why our son is suddenly so scared of sleep. He's still waking up everynight screaming or crying. We still haven't figured out whether he's waking up from nightmares, or waking up and then getting scared because he's alone - but at least we get the three hours with him asleep in his own bed first.
